The first Sunshine Festival was held in 1984 to benefit the Donaldsonville Fire Department. The festival was organized and sponsored by a group of concerned citizens. The highlight of that first festival was a car race.
In 1988, the festival became the primary fundraiser for the Donaldsonville Area Chamber of Commerce. The proceeds are used to promote and stimulate the economy as well as Chamber activities -- whether it be operational expenses (like telephone, utilities and office equipment), seminars for our members, or postage for sending out the over 1000 tourist information packets.
Through the years the festival has undergone many changes. It is now held at the Louisiana Fair Grounds. There are many activities including rides for the kids, live entertainment, terrific food, historic displays, exhibits, and the world-famous "Cajun & Creole Cook-off" -- not to mention the highly competitive "Hot 'n Spicy Political Cook-off".
Admission is free so come join the fun and experience the unique history of Donaldsonville -- Louisiana's Second Acadian Settlement
