Touring

Taking a walking tour of Donaldsonville is the best way to observe and appreciate the individuality and architectural variety of the buildings in the downtown historic district, the second largest historic district in the state of Louisiana.

The civil parish of Ascension derived its name from the Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church, which was established in 1772 in the settlement which would later become Donaldsonville. Construction of the present structure began in 1875 and was completed in 1896. This magnificent cathedral-like church stands as successor to two earlier structures on the same site. The church is open weekdays, except holidays, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pre-arranged complimentary group tours are available seven days a week.
